What was the Boar's Head Festival?

The Boar's Head Festival dates back to the Middle Ages. At it's inception, it was a pagan holiday, but eventually became a Christian celebration as missionaries invaded the Anglo-Saxons. The boar was a massive animal that weighed hundreds of pounds, and the head was often decorated to pay tribute to the slayer of said boar. But as the tradition took on a more Christian meaning, the head was decorated as a tribute to Jesus instead.

The festival itself became a sort of parade, with people dressing up in 14th century clothing, performing songs and skits or displaying dancing or juggling skills. Today, many large churches still celebrate the Boar's Head Festival! We had the privilege of attending one nearby a few years ago. It was a fun little "trip" to the Middle Ages that I would recommend everyone experience at least once!

The Boar's Head Carol

The boar’s head in hand bring I,
Bedeck'd with bays and rosemary.
I pray you, my masters, be merry
The boar's head, as I understand,
Is the rarest dish in all this land,
Which thus bedeck'd with a gay garland
Our steward hath provided this
In honor of the King of Bliss;
Which, on this day to be served is
The mightiest hunter of them all
We honor in this festal hall
Born of a humble Virgin mild,
Heaven's King became a little child:
He hunted down through earth and hell
That swart boar Death until it fell.
This mighty deed for us was done,
Therefore sing we in unison:
Let not this boar's head cause alarm,
The huntsman drew his power to harm.
So death, which still appears so grim,
Has yielded all its power to Him!
